If a vape activates without a deliberate button press or draw, treat the behaviour as a stop-use problem. Do not keep charging it, carry it in a pocket or open the battery to look for a cause. The checks below record external observations for support; they do not diagnose the fault in a particular model.
Immediate actions
- Disconnect power if it is charging. Do not reconnect it to see whether the symptom returns.
- Create distance from combustibles. Move away from bedding, paper and other flammable material only if the device is cool and it is safe to move it.
- Do not dismantle it. Do not open a sealed battery, bridge contacts, rewire a control or bypass a protection feature.
- Escalate a dangerous event. If there is smoke, fire, intense heat or immediate danger, move to a safe place and call 111.

Record observations without testing the fault

Why you should not keep trying to reproduce it
Unexpected activation can have more than one explanation, and the outside symptom does not identify a safe repair. Repeated firing also creates another charging and heat event to manage. A general article cannot inspect the control, seals, contacts or battery protection in your exact model. The correct boundary is therefore to isolate the device and use the documented support or disposal route.
What to tell support
Write down the model and serial information if it can be read without opening the device. Add when the event happened, whether it was charging, whether a pod or tank had just been changed, and whether there was heat, smell, smoke, swelling or visible damage. Include a photo of the outside only. This gives the retailer or manufacturer useful context without asking you to perform a risky test.
Storage and disposal questions
Do not leave a suspected device under bedding, on a bed or on a couch. Do not put a damaged lithium-ion device into a rubbish or recycling stream until the responsible local service tells you that route is accepted. The Ministry for the Environment recycling guidance directs readers to local council options for batteries and e-waste; its page is a starting point, not a universal damaged-device disposal rule. For example, Auckland Council says lithium batteries, including batteries embedded in vapes, cannot go in rubbish or recycling bins and lists collection options. Other councils may set different acceptance and transport instructions, so contact your own council, retailer or recognised collection service before moving the device.
When the 111 branch applies
Use 111 when there is an immediate fire, smoke or injury risk, or when you cannot safely control the situation. Move people away first and follow the emergency operator’s instructions. Do not return to collect the device or attempt a battery repair while it is hot or smoking.
